When massaging, areas of tension and weakness are always identified. The massage may release the tension and make you feel more comfortable immediately but the underlying weaknesses may cause the issues to return. It is important to receive a massage first to release the tension in tight , scarred or adhered soft tissue. These tensions can restrict movement in surrounding muscles and cause these muscles to become weakened. By releasing tension the the weaker muscles can then work with improved function and strengthen up more readily. Regular practise of remedial exercises help to remedy this situation by building up strength in those weakened muscles and preventing tension in the opposing muscles. After a massage I spend a short time going through exercises that help prevent the return of tension.
